Barrow Borough Council’s annual garden competition
Last updated at 11:14, Saturday, 15 September 2012
THE green-fingered winners of Barrow Borough Council’s annual garden competition were announced at an awards ceremony in Barrow Town Hall last Wednesday.
Organised by the housing department, the competition rewards the best gardens from the different wards across town, as well as Walney and Dalton.
This year, saw a rise of entries for each of the categories, which include best flower garden, best vegetable garden, best garden by a disabled person, and the overall winner for the best estate in the borough.
Caroline Wagstaff, a member of the housing team and one of the organisers of the event, said: “The competition helps to improve the estates and the quality of life for the people who live there.
“We get a lot of entries every year, but this year there was quite a significant rise in the amount of people who applied and the standard was very high.
“It is good for the gardeners to get some recognition for the hard work they’ve put in.”
There were also prizes awarded to the best school gardens, with Quarry Brow Nursery taking the top gong and a new community initiative award which went to Mrs Anne Flemming.
