A TEENAGER has spoken of her dismay at discovering her scooter had been destroyed in a fire.

Laura Henley left her scooter parked in Greengate Street in Barrow on Thursday of last week but when she returned the following morning the bike was not there.

When she contacted the police she was told the scooter was one of two that had been found burnt out in Mardale Grove.

The 18-year-old has now been left having to get the train from Askam, where she lives, to Barrow, where she works as a health care assistant, every day.

She told the Evening Mail: “I went to get the bike at 11.30am and found it wasn’t there.

“I got home and rang the police and told them what had happened. They said they had found the bike and that it had been stolen and set on fire.

“I had only had the bike for a year and a half and bought it brand new. It cost £820. I work in Barrow but live in Askam so I have to get trains everywhere.”

Miss Henley said the police had told her that there is little evidence of who could have taken the scooter as it has been completely burnt.

She said: “I have insurance but I’m not having much luck with them, unfortunately.

“The state it was left in was absolutely ridiculous. I don’t know how they could have left it that way.”

The bike was one of three scooters found in wasteland at the back of Basterfield Gardens at 4.30am on Friday, July 3.

A caller informed the emergency services that two of the scooters were alight and firefighters battled the blaze using hoses.
