Askam kids get their skates on in bid for improved park
Last updated at 17:10, Friday, 01 February 2013
SCHOOL children are campaigning for their skate park to be upgraded and made safer.
Askam youngsters are appealing to the parish council and County Council to back their plans for the improvements to the play area.
Liam Somerville and Luke Thomson, both 11 years old, have big ideas for how they would like the new park to look.
Liam said that his ideal skate park would “look like Barrow skate park, except here”.
The 11-year-old explained that he would like a “quarter ramp, then a spine then another quarter” to be included in the middle of the concrete park.
Luke added that he would like a “quarter ramp with a grinding box and rails”.
He said: “All the rails in this skate park are all wonky.”
Other suggestions made by Luke included having a concrete “bowl” in the new park for the children in the area to use.
The two Askam Village School pupils are keen that something is done to improve the park.
The pair generated support for the cause through their Facebook group ‘Askam-in-Furness needs a new skate park’, which has received 121 ‘likes’ on the page.
Members of the group previously attended an Askam and Ireleth parish council meeting to put forward their ideas.
As a result the Drop Zone youth project are helping the pair with their campaign.
Two detached youth workers visited Askam on Monday night to meet them.
Youth worker Keiron Christian explained that the Drop Zone would assist in putting their plans on paper to present to the parish council again.
The youth workers are in Askam every Monday evening from 6pm to 8pm at the railway station.
Youth worker Michael Holden added: “We are hoping our help will speed up the process, from getting what you want on paper to getting it done.”
The youth workers are urging that if anybody else would like their input on the plans they can go along to see them on Monday evenings.
