Skelton impressed with AFC triallist

BARROW AFC skipper Gavin Skelton says former Morecambe midfielder Garry Hunter would be a good signing for Barrow AFC.

Names of nine of the 12 triallists who played for the Bluebirds in their 3-0 home friendly win over Cumbrian rivals Workington last night were omitted from the team-sheet, but we understand it was 27-year-old Hunter who scored the second goal with a stunning long-range strike.

Skelton said: “Gary has done well.

“He is an experienced player and if we can get him on board he will be a good signing for the club.

“His experience in the middle of the park could help the likes of James Owen, Alex-Ray Harvey and Richie Baker in there.”

Ray-Harvey, former Wrexham striker Obi Anoruo and Holker Old Boys winger Dave Swarbrick were the three triallists named on the team-sheet.

The other nine are believed to have included defenders Sean Hessey and Charlie Clough, winger Danny Lloyd, who played the full 90 minutes, and Burnley attacking starlet Medhi Lazaar, who it is thought, scored the third goal.

One certainty is that the opening goal in last night’s first leg of the pre-season Chas Kendall (Coral) Trophy was scored by new right-back Matt Flynn.

Barrow have now won their opening two friendlies, having also beaten the Furness Select amateurs XI 2-0.

Skelton said: “In the first half it was a good, proper game.

“Workington are a good side and have some good players.

“We played okay, there was some good stuff and some sloppy stuff.

“And there were some positive signs, but we gave it away in the final third at times. I don’t suppose you want to be hitting your straps too early on.

“It’s about finding a bit of fitness and form and I thought it was a step-up from Saturday and a good work-out for both teams.”
