AFC striker Brown netted against the Blues, now it's lambs to the slaughter

DAVID Brown’s big FA Cup moment was scoring for then third division Hull City in their 6-1 defeat by mighty Chelsea some 10 years ago.

And now he is looking to help the Bluebirds hook bigger fish themselves by winning through tomorrow’s fourth qualifying round away to Blue Square North high-fliers Tamworth (kick-off 3pm).

The 30-year-old former Football League forward feels the FA Cup still retains its magic appeal.

Said Brown: “I played for Hull at Aston Villa in front of 40,000 but the Chelsea game at Boothferry Park was probably the highlight.

“They had all the big names, players like Gus Poyet, Chris Sutton, Roberto Di Matteo and Dennis Wise. Frank Leboeuf was marking me and although we lost 6-1, I managed to get our goal in the first half.

“I was top scorer at Hull one season and it helped save them from relegation. Looking at where they are now, it’s nice to think you played a part all those years ago.

“There’s always a buzz around the FA Cup, Tamworth will be up for it but so are we.

“It is a special competition and great for non-league clubs when they get in the first round.”

Brown, who scored his first goal for Barrow against Eastbourne last week, is mulling over an improved offer from Barrow.

He is playing on a non-contract basis, having originally set his sights on a full-time offer from clubs in the January transfer window.

Adds the Wigan-based forward: “Let’s get past Tamworth first and then have another look, we’re not a million miles away.”

AFC joint manager Dave Bayliss – who himself reached the FA Cup fifth round with Luton – said they had watched Tamworth twice over the last week.

He adds: “You can have all the info you want on a team, but if you don’t do the job on the day then it’s a waste of time. But we are confident we can get a result.”

Barrow (from, seven subs allowed): Martin, Pearson, McNulty, Jones, Henney, Boyd, Bond, Logan, D Brown, Walker, Brodie, Winn, P Brown, Tait, Hunt, Kerr, Sheridan, Bayliss, Deasy.

l The draw for the first round proper of the FA Cup will be held at 1pm on Sunday. See www.nwemail.co.uk for full details.
