Barrow AFC win for first time in nine league games

Blue Square Bet Premier: Gateshead 0 Barrow AFC 1

Goal: Barrow: Adam Boyes (2)

Attendance: 610 (including 58 Barrow supporters)

BARROW AFC recorded their first win in nine league games with a battling 1-0 New Year's Day win at Gateshead in Blue Square Bet Premier.

Barrow took the lead after 62 seconds when a free-kick by Sean Hessey was headed down into a muddy patch on the pitch by Tom Anderson and, after Gateshead defender James Curtis failed to clear it, Adam Boyes tapped in his 12th goal of the season.

The Bluebirds should have had a penalty moments later when Boyes was blatantly shoved in the box by Tynesiders' skipper Ben Clark. Referee Anthony Blackhouse missed the incident.

The remainder of the first half brought chances galore at both ends, with Anderson twice clearing off the line to keeper Barrow ahead.

Barrow rode their luck at time in the second half but defended as if their lives depended on it to bag a crucial victory.

Bluebirds boss Dave Bayliss made two changes to the side which lost 4-1 at Macclesfield in the FA Cup on Saturday, with Anderson and Garry Hunter replacing Matt Flynn and Louis Almond.

Gateshead (4-4-2): Adam Bartlett; Carl Magnay, Chris Bush, James Curtis, Ben Clark (captain); Jamie Chandler, Phil Turnbull, Josh Gillies, James Marwood;  Ryan Donaldson, Liam Henderson.
Subs: Jordan Nixon, Yemi Odubade, Micky Cummins, James Brown, Glenn Wilson.

Barrow (4-5-1): Danny Hurst; Mike Pearson (captain), Gavin Skelton, Sean Hessey, Tom Anderson; James Owen, Alex-Ray Harvey, Garry Hunter, Paul Rutherford, Sean McConville; Adam Boyes.
Subs: Shaun Pearson, Matt Flynn, Danny Rowe, Joe Jackson, Louis Almond.
