THE guest speaker at Barrow Civic and Local History Society was Dr Mike Winstanley, a retired senior lecturer in social and regional history at Lancaster University.
His talk, “For Tortola: Lonsdale Merchants, Quakers and the West Indies”, explored some of the trading, personal and religious connections between the Morecambe Bay area and the Caribbean Virgin Islands.
It was the first time that Dr. Winstanley had spoken to the society and everyone enjoyed his talk. Eddie Payne gave the vote of thanks.
The next meeting of the society is on Friday March 31 from 2pm at the Trinity Church Centre, off Abbey Road, Barrow.
Maurice Steele will give a talk with the intriguing title of “It should have been stopped”.
It tells the story of the Lake District and how it has developed from the last Ice Age to the present day.
Everyone with an interest in local history is very welcome to come along to the meeting. Admission, including refreshments, is £2.50 for members and £3 for visitors.
