THE Memories Page has found 58 South Cumbrians who are named on the Thiepval Memorial, on the Somme battlefield in France.

They have been found through research using records from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.

There will be others, as not all families provided address details when the records were drawn up.

The largest number were with the territorials drawn from Millom and Furness who signed up for overseas service with the 1/4th Battalion of the King's Own Royal Lancaster Regiment

Askam

July 1: Pte William Calvert, No. 13851, served with the 11th Lonsdale Battalion of the Border Regiment. Pte Calvert, aged 32, was the son of Thomas Calvert of 116 Crossley Street, Askam, and was a pre-war steelworker at Workington. Barrow

July 1: Pte William Lister, No. 12/1659, served with the 14th York and Lancaster Regiment. The 36-year-old was the son of Mrs Elizabeth Graham, of 14 Lumley Street, Barrow.

July 1: Second Lt Robert Meres Stainton served with the 10th York and Lancaster Regiment. The 22-year-old was the only son of Walton and Annie Alice Stainton, of Hill Crest, 37 Mount Pleasant, Barrow.

July 1: Pte Joseph Witherow, No. 19201, served with the 11 th Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. The 22-year-old was the son of Margaret Jane Sheffield (formerly Witherow) of 41 Duncan Street, Barrow and William Sheffield (stepfather).

July 7: Pte John Thomas Hubbold, No. G/5896, served with the 7th Royal Sussex Regiment. The 25-year was the son of John Thomas and Rachel Shaw Hubbold, of 9C Walney Road, Barrow.

July 23: Pte Arthur Brady, No. 17833, served with the 19th Manchester Regiment. The 41-year-old was the son of Luke and Annie Brady, of Barrow.

July 26: Pte George Elliott, No. 21579, served with the 20th Lancashire Fusiliers. The 19-year-old was the son of James and Mary Elliott, of 22 Leicester Street, Barrow.

July 28: Cpl Robert Stuart Hawcridge, No SPTS/2871, served with the 24th Royal Fusiliers. The 29-year-old was the son of Arthur and Emma Hawcridge, of 6 Prospect Road, Barrow.

August 3: Pte James Hems, No. 3605, served with the 1/4th King’s Own. The 17-year-old was the son of James and Frances Hems, of 24 Hawcoat, Barrow.

August 3: Pte George Walton Robinson, No 3080, served with the 1/4th King’s Own. The 18-year-old was the son of George and Martha Robinson, of 2 Penrith Place, Barrow.

August 8: Pte James Craig, No. 200492, served with the 1/4th King’s Own. The 19-year-old was the only son of Alexander and Jane Ellen Craig, of 56 Powerful Street, Barrow.

August 8: Cpl Stanley Richardson, No. 2194, served with the 1/4th King’s Own. The 21-year-old was the son of Mr J. T and Mrs S. L. Richardson, of 8 Delhi Street, Vickerstown, Walney.

August 15: Pte Samuel Myerscough, No. 3745, served with the 1/4th King’s Own. The 39-year-old was the husband of Beatrice Alice Myerscough of 6E Egerton Buildings, Barrow.

August 16: Pte John Quinney, No. 21315, served with the 8th King’s Own. The 20-year was the son of Henrietta E. Moffatt, of 8 Walney Road, Barrow.

August 16: Pte Frank S. Wright, No. 3900, served with the 1/4th King’s Own. The 23-year-old was the son of Richard Wright, of 26 Hope Street, Barrow.

August 18: Pte John Walker, No. 2845, served with the 1/4th King’s Own. The 24-year-old was the husband of Jane Walker, of 31 Franklin Street, Barrow.

September 15: Pte William Thomas Holloway, No. 15533, served with the 3rd Coldstream Guards. The 25-year-old was the son of David Henry and Mary Holloway, of 47 St Luke Street, Barrow.

September 27: Second Lt Ernest Lockett Cole, served with the 8th Northamptonshire Regiment. The 30-year-old was the son of Mr J. H. Cole of Barrow and the husband of Mary Comstance Cole, of 21 Romney Road, Barrow.

September 27: Pte Stanley Higgin, no. 21582, served with the 6th Border Regiment. He was the son of Frances Agnes Tyson, of 44 Robert Street, Barrow.

September 28: Pte Fred Fittes, No. 200761, served with the 1/4th King’s Own. The 32-year-old was the son of Ignatious and Elizabeth Fittes, of 9 Harrigate Street, Barrow.

October 6: Rifleman John Williams, No. R/723, served with the 10th King’s Royal Rifle Corps. He was the son of Harrald and Kate Williams, of 64 Thwaite Street, Barrow.

November 3: Second Lt William Henry Bright Gross served with the 1st Queen’s Royal West Surrey Regiment. The 26-year-old was the son of George and Emma Eliza Gross, of 106 Greengate Street, Barrow.

November 13: Pte Robert Postlethwaite Kinnish, served with the 8th King’s Own. The 17-year-old was the son of William and Eleanor Kinnish, of 58 Ainslie Street, Barrow.

Bowness

July 1: Sgt Ernest Marshall, No. 13432, served with the 11th Lonsdale Battalion of the Border Regiment. The 33-year-old was the son of James and Priscilla Marshall, of 32 Necropolis Road, Bradford and the husband of Mary Marshall, of St Martin’s Square, Bowness.

Broughton

July 1: Pte Wilfred Ashcroft, No. 18062, served with the 1st King’s Own. The 41-year-old was the son of James and Mary Agnes Ashcroft and the husband of Maggie Ashcroft, of the Square, Broughton.

July 16: Pte Edward Turner Woodburn, No. 5833, served with the 3rd South African Infantry. The 43-year-old was the son of the late William and Sarah Woodburn, of 87 High Cleator Street, Dalton.

August 8: Pte Edward Nicholson, No. 809, served with the 1/4th King’s Own. The 29-year-old was the son of Benjamin and Sarah A. Nicholson, of 6 Fell Croft, Dalton.

September 3: Pte T. P. Clark, No. 20564, served with the 2nd King’s Own Scottish Borderers. The 35-year-old was the son of the late William Clark, of 21 Fell Croft, Dalton and the husband of Frances Clark, of 9 Rock Villas, Silverdale.

August 1: Pte Henry Richard Atkinson, No. 2386, served with the 1/4th King’s Own. The 22-year-old was the son of Henry Richard Atkinson, of Witewell Cottage, Flookburgh and the late Martha. Haverthwaite

August 8: Pte William Henry Rawsthorne, No. 3655, served with the 1/4 th King’s Own. The 21-year-old was the son of William A. and Margaret A. Rawsthorne, of Haverthwaite.

August 8: Pte Andrew Coulter, No. 2797, served with the 1/5th King’s Own. The 34-year-old was the son of the late James and Mary Coulter, of Millom and was the husband of Elizabeth Fuge, formerly Coulter, of Queen Street, Millom.
