THIS group of Evening Mail pictures was taken on December 5 in 1983 and shows the shop front and staff at the Barrow pork and beef butchers L & M Leeming.

The business was at 89 to 91 Dalton Road – next to the covered link to Barrow outdoor market and Portland Walk - and was run by Muriel Leeming.

The firm was a member of the National Federation of Meat Traders and among products on offer in 1983 was bacon hocks at 45p and best mince at 98p per pound.

Fillet steak was the most expensive cut of meat on offer at £2.96 per pound, while braising steak was £1.19.

Leeming’s did their own pork pies, sausage meat and sage and onion stuffing.

Possibly linked to the firm is the Muriel Leeming Perpetual Challenge Salver which is contested at the Christmas sales held at Ulverston Auction Mart.

Back in 1959 Barrow had a remarkable 33 butchers.

On Dalton Road you could choose from Eastmans at 194, F. J. Erbs at 53, R. Forrester and Son at 204, E. J. Martindale at 152, D. Redhead at 75 and H. Wood at 66.
