THREE soldiers of the King's Own who won gallantry medals in the First World War have just had new streets named after them in Lancaster.

All served with the city-based regiment which drew many of its volunteers from Furness.

One of them, Cpt Albert Ellwood served with the 1/4th Battalion where many of the troops would have been drawn from Barrow, Ulverston, Dalton and Millom.

He was awarded the Military Cross but was killed in action at Givenchy, France, aged30, on April 14 in 1918.

The citation for his gallantry medal, published in the London Gazette, noted: "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty.

"He led his company in the attack with great dash and courage and captured all his objectives.

"He personally put out of action an enemy machine gun and crew and consolidated and held his position under most difficult conditions against several counter attacks.

"He showed great ability and resource."

The other two men from the regiment who have been honoured are 2/Lt Donald MacDonald, who won the Military Cross three times, and Pte Reginald Sydney Dennison, who won the Military Medal.

The streets have been named by housebuilder Barratt Manchester in the new Quernmore Park development .
