A TALK by Rod White, based on his extensive research into the lives of the people whose Second World War memorials can be found in Barrow Cemetery, followed the annual meeting of Barrow Civic and Local History Society.

His “Stories behind the Stones” presentation gave a thought-provoking insight into the lives of the servicemen and civilians who lost their lives during the war.

The meeting was well attended and the vote of thanks was given by Derek Lyon.

The next meeting of the society will be held at the Trinity Church Centre on Friday, February 24 at 2pm.

The guest speaker will be Dr Mike Winstanley, who is the retired senior lecturer in social and regional history at Lancaster University.

His talk is called “For Tortola: Lonsdale Merchants, Quakers and the West Indies”.

It will explore some of the trading, personal and religious connections between the Morecambe Bay area and the Caribbean Virgin Islands.

Admission to the meeting, including refreshments is £2.50 for members and £3 for visitors. Everyone is welcome to attend.

A revised, updated version of the society’s history website has just been launched.

This was funded by a grant from the Sir John Fisher Foundation and the new website was designed by Neal Hardy.

It can be found at www.barrowhistorysociety.co.uk
