YOUNGSTERS are being given the chance to twirl their bats and spin a googly with cricket coaching sessions through the summer.

Vickerstown Cricket Club veteran Peter Scott is introducing children to the game twice a week at the Walney club, with the hope of getting them hooked.

The experienced coach – who has been teaching young cricketers the intricacies of the sport for 35 years – is determined not to let Vickerstown struggle through a lack of numbers in future years.

He is optimistic those attending the coaching sessions, which include a number of drills, skills sessions and fun games, will want to carry on playing.

“They seem to be enjoying it,” said Scott of the children who have taken part in the first few sessions.

“I want to get kids on Walney playing cricket. It’s something nice for them to do when it’s nice outside.

“Hopefully some of the kids will keep on playing and we can provide players for the future at Vickerstown. It’s vitally important that we introduce them to the game. Duddon died as a team a few years ago and Hawcoat Park have had to scrap their second team this year as well.

“We’ve struggled to get two teams out at times at Vickerstown as well, and coaching sessions like this can help us get more players for the future to stop that happening.”

Sessions at Vickerstown’s Rainey Park take place on Wednesdays and Fridays during the school holidays.

They run from 10am onwards and are open to boys and girls aged 15 and under. Children with little experience of the game are welcome to attend as cricket equipment will be provided and a soft ball is used most of the time.
