ULVERSTON Golf Club’s promising junior players came through a tough tie to reach the final 16 of the Royal British Legion Junior Golf Challenge.

Facing 2013/14 national champions Huyton and Prescott, the Ulverston side claimed an impressive victory at the home of the Liverpool-based club.

Teeing off on the undulating par-68, 6,022 yard course – which was in splendid condition – Ulverston got off to a flying start to build up an early lead.

Leading pair Scott Pugh and Will Hendley set the standard for the day, making a half on the first hole to match a superb birdie from Huyton and Prescott’s two-handicap lead player.

Building a handy 5-up lead, the boys put in an assured rearguard performance to repel the efforts of the Merseyside team.

Anchormen David Boardman and Luke Quint built on the promising start, holding the home players for the early holes before edging into a two-hole advantage.

While the home team fought back to reverse the advantage for a time, a stunning display over the final holes ensured the Ulverston boys halved their game and reasserted their superiority.

And so after 18-holes of entertaining golf and sportsmanship from both teams, Ulverston claimed an assured 2-up aggregate victory to book a place in the next round of this national knockout competition, with the finals played in October.

In aid of the charity’s yearly Poppy Appeal, the junior golf challenge has run since 2011, and aims to involve younger people in the work of the Royal British Legion.
