THE Olympic spirit flooded into Ulverston Leisure Centre as two Team GB swimmers delivered a masterclass to keen youngsters.

London 2012 Olympians Amy Smith and Joe Roebuck put more than 40 members of Ulverston Amateur Swimming Club through their paces.

The duo, who both have Commonwealth Games and European Championships medals to their name, worked with new and experienced club swimmers on a busy afternoon.

Children aged between 10 and 18 took part in the sessions, which were split between development and senior swimmers, and River and Sea Otters members.

As well as working in the pool on all four strokes, diving and other techniques, the youngsters also spent time out of the water talking through what it takes to reach the highest level in the sport.

Ulverston ASC chairman Paul Milburn was thrilled with how the afternoon and evening went, and said: “It was absolutely fantastic.

“It was a fantastic event and very inspirational for the swimmers and for the coaches who attended as well.

“There was a practical technique session for the older swimmers, who are in the senior and development squads, and for the younger swimmers as well. There was also a presentation to them all about what is involved in becoming an Olympic swimmer. It was very interesting.”

He added: “It is a great honour to have two Olympic swimmers come to Ulverston and be able to cascade their experience, knowledge and professionalism to our children.

“Hopefully it can inspire them to carry on with their dedicated work.”

Smith and Roebuck worked with the Ulverston swimmers on freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly during the two sessions – which lasted one hour for the less experienced members and two hours for the development and senior squad members.

Milburn added: “They looked at how to streamline strokes for efficiency and showed them different drills to work on to improve those strokes.

“We want to say thank you to Amy and Joe for coming to Ulverston and being able to be part of our club.”

The club also thanked main sponsors JF Hornby, their coaches, including head coach Paul Elwood, for their roles in the sessions and North Country Leisure and Ulverston Leisure Centre for allowing the use of their facilities on the day.
