MILLOM stand just one point away from the National League Division Two title to cap an outstanding season for the Devonshire Road club.

But they face tough opposition in the shape of Featherstone Lions at Yorkshire tomorrow.

Walney Central will be looking to hold on to their Top Four crown when they take on newly crowned Cumbria League champions Distington at the Recreation Ground, Whitehaven.

Featherstone Lions v Millom

ANTHONY “Midge” Dixon is hoping for a double celebration at Featherstone Lions tomorrow.

The Woollybacks stalwart makes his 300th appearance for the club, and one point against Jamie Rooney’s side will see the National Conference Division Two trophy head to Devonshire Road.

Dixon will join an elite club of reaching the 300 mark – only Paul Evans and Craig Wilson have topped that total – and Dixon is a key figure with massive experience of crucial games behind him.

Coach Tom Sibley is aware of the task ahead and of the key role the BARLA international will play.

He said ahead of the long trip deep into Yorkshire: “This is a vital game against a very tough side. The Lions are a big unit but we have to stay calm.

“I believe that we can win the game up front, we have a very strong set of forwards,we will get among them and then move the ball to the back line where I feel our speed will see us through.

“I have seen one or two recent videos and we will have to really turn up and be ready for them. I have every confidence in the lads, they are very much up for the task ahead.

“We have trained very hard this week and unfortunately I will have to make hard decisions in having to leave some players out. We have a strong squad and they have all played their part this season.

“Lee Edmondson misses out with a back problem and will not be risked as he goes on the BARLA tour to South Africa on Sunday. All at Millom wish him a successful tour.”

Another top line forward, Steve Dawson, could also miss out. He has a hamstring injury and is rated 50-50.

When the two sides met at Devonshire Road the Woollybacks won a thrilling encounter 36-28 and big games are expected in Yorkshire from forwards Warwick Carter, Ethan Kelly, Marcus O’Brien and Paul Carter along with Sibley, himself a great leader.

Cumbria League Top Four final

Recreation Ground, Whitehaven

DEFENDING champions Walney Central saw the Cumbria League title head to Distington this week after they saw off the challenge of Seaton on Tuesday 22-12 to claim the crown.

The two come up against each other in the Top Four final at Whitehaven tomorrow with trophy holders Cents aiming to hold on to the cup (kick-off 2.30pm).

However, a broken thumb rules out the experienced Mike Whitehead while Brad Pearce is unavailable.

BARLA forward Danny Morrow is rated 50-50 after picking up an ankle injury in the play-off victory against Barrow Island last weekend otherwise Cents will field a similar side. Into the squad comes Eddie Matsine and Jonathan Corkill.

Coach Shaun Morrow said: “We will miss Mike Whitehead’s experience but we will go up and give it our best shot and enjoy the day.

“Maybe they will feel the effects of Tuesday’s game but we will be taking them seriously.”
