South Lakes 13 Carlisle 2nds 0

SOUTH Lakes bounced back from their disappointing opening-day defeat at Kendal by securing a 13-0 Cumbria League victory over Carlisle.

The inexperienced Carlisle side played their hearts out on a hot autumn day and their solid defence kept South Lakes at bay for the first 12 minutes before Pam Robertson converted a short corner to open the scoring.

New player Gemma Jupp then bagged a brace within two minutes.

Despite the tide going against them, the youthful Carlisle outfit kept plugging away.

The home back three of Cat Saunders, Rebekah Nuttall and Vikki Edgar and sweepers captain Holly Nuttall and Suze Caveney worked hard to sustain the pressure on the nippy Carlisle forwards.

Such good work released Anna Stable, who made it 4–0 and, within two minutes, player-of-the match Natalie Knowles (right) scored the first of her four goals, followed by Sarah Robinson netting with a beautifully-taken sweep from another short corner.

South Lakes took a 6-0 lead into the half-time break.

Knowles scored her second within the first minute of the restart before Robinson did likewise with a cheeky tap-in on the post from a well-worked short corner.

Stables’ second was the result of a deflection from a Holly Nuttall strike into the D.

Rebecca Cook then smashed a goal into the net, followed by a strike from the top of the D from the skipper.

Angela Slater was unlucky not to see herself on the scoresheet when her well-taken goal was disallowed following an infringement. Knowles added two more to complete the scoring.

South Lakes thanked Margaret and Fred Mawdsley for umpiring and Gayle Mawdsley for providing refreshments.

On Saturday, they play Ambleside at Kirbie Kendal School.
