ASKAM United managed to beat the weather to play their West Lancashire League Division One fixture with Ladybridge, but were unable to claim a much-needed win.

The Villagers showed character to come from behind to draw 1-1, but Duddon Road is no longer the fortress it once was – with this being just the second point they have picked up from six home league games this season.

Ladybridge went ahead after 25 minutes, but Askam player/manager Callum Rayner equalised from the penalty spot after Matthew France was fouled in the box.

It was a very even game, although Askam did have chances to win, which they did not take.

They moved up to 11th in the table with the point and the sides will meet again in two weeks on Ladybridge’s 3G pitch.

The majority of games were postponed due to the recent heavy rain, but in Division Two Millom played on the plastic pitch at Dallam School against Milnthorpe Corinthians, going down 4-1.

Despite being strengthened by returning players, all they had to show for their efforts was a late consolation goal from Jamie Pattinson.

Walney Island also managed to play but their long trip to Stoneclough ended in a 6-1 defeat, with Kyle Carter scoring the goal.

In the North West Counties Division One, Holker Old Boys are up to fifth as Scott Redhead’s first game in charge was a happy one, ending in a 2-1 win on the plastic pitch at Widnes that is home to Widnes Vikings and both Everton and Liverpool Ladies.

Phil Coombe put Holker ahead but the home side levelled before half-time and John Paul Stanway scored the winner for Holker in the second half.

Weather permitting, Holker face a trip to Colne in the Lancashire Challenge Trophy tomorrow night.

The investment by Sport England on the playing surface at Bootle is certainly proving to be a good one as their Millholme pitch was in superb condition for the Furness Premier League Riflemans Garage Premier Division tie with Furness Cavaliers reserves.

The home side dominated the first half, but only had a Joe Capstick goal to show for their efforts at the break.

Cavaliers improved in the second half, but when Matthew Clark made it 2-0 the game looked over.

Substitute Kyle Delves changed that by coming off the bench to score twice and rescue a point for the visitors.

Both sides went close to winning the game in added time, with Steven Moore hitting the bar for Bootle and Delves having a shot tipped on to the bar by the Bootle keeper Joe Harvey as it ended 2-2.

Haverigg United’s Wilson Park pitch also stood up to the test for the second week running, but Barrow Celtic dampened the home side’s mood by winning the Terry Clinton Memorial Trophy tie 2-0 through Connor Smith and a Russell Lowe own goal.

The Furness Junior Cup got under way and Kirkby United reserves pulled off a surprise but thoroughly deserved win against Ormsgill North End.

They ended Ormsgill’s 100 per cent start to the season with a 5-2 victory thanks to goals from Andrew Benson (2), Dan Marshall, Tom Marshall and Neil Metcalfe.

Ormsgill’s goals came from Mike Crampton and a Danny Cunningham penalty.

Coniston reserves earned their first win of the season by beating fellow strugglers Walney Island A 4-0 in the Division Two clash at Biggar Bank. Their scorers were Dave Cooper (2), Liam Owen and Connor Whirity.
