THE Barrow and District Junior Football League will kick off their new season in September with bolstered numbers.

The competition, which operates divisions from under-sevens to under-16s for boys and under-10s to under-12s for girls, has seen a number of new teams join the fold.

Vickerstown and Millom Juniors have entered sides in the boys leagues – the latter taking over from the now defunct Black Combe Casuals – while the girls competition has expanded eastwards.

As well as teams from Barrow Celtic, Dalton, Ulverston and Duddon, Kendal United and town rivals Ibis will be involved in the 2015/16 campaign.

There will be a total of 125 teams from 19 clubs involved when matches kick off on the opening weekend of September 7/8. Last season, 16 clubs fielded 114 sides.

The biggest competition will be in the boys under-14s division, with 17 sides competing. They are among 109 boys sides across all age groups, with no league having fewer than 10 teams involved.

There are 16 girls teams over three age groups, with six at both under-12s and under-14s.

League chairman Dennis Boyd said: “The Barrow and District Junior Football League is stronger than ever.”

The league have also appointed a new secretary in the shape of Ben Shirley.
