BARROW Island’s Luke Cresswell put in a man of the match performance as Cumbria scored a fantastic 26-0 win over Lancashire to be crowned Tri-Series county champions.
Victory at Blackbrook on Sunday followed a comfortable 42-16 win over Yorkshire at Egremont last week.
The side, led by former Barrow Raiders star Gary Broadbent and Les Ashe, took an early lead with Distington’s Phil Lister going over the whitewash and Millom’s Adam Kelly kicking the first of three successful conversions.
Players from South Cumbria played a major part in the success with full-back Cresswell’s Island team-mate Perry Singleton scoring a brace of tries while Askam’s Mark Tyson also touched down and Lister also notched a double.
After a tight, tense and tough opening half Cumbria went into the break 10-0 up through Singleton’s first try as Lancashire paid the price for having two players sin-binned late-on.
Other players from the South Cumbria area involved in the competition were Sam Jones (Barrow Island) Tom Hopkins (Askam) and Danny Morrow (Walney Central) with furhter Millom representatives being Ethan Kelly and Lee Edmondson.
Cumbria under-19s were unable to match the feat of the senior team, as they went down 20-10. Barrow Island's Ryan Clegg crossed for a try for the visitors.
