CUMBERLAND demolished Cambridgeshire inside two days to reach the Unicorns Championship Final in emphatic style.

Gary Pratt's men wrapped up a one-sided game just before tea on day two at Saffron Walden, winning by an innings and 59 runs to ensure qualification.

As Eastern Division champions, they will face Western Division table-toppers Oxfordshire in a four-day final at Carlisle CC, starting on September 6.

Going into the game with a 13-point lead over second placed Bucks, Cumberland took command from the start on a pitch normally reputed to be a batsman's paradise.

Former Silverdale all-rounder Chris Williams led the way with a brilliant display of seam bowling, taking 8 for 47 from 21.4 overs as the hosts were dismissed for a meagre 110 in their first innings.

Williams' analysis was a new county record, surpassing the 8 for 50 taken by Millom's David Lupton against Durham in 1970. He now holds the County record in both forms of the game, having taken 6 for 49 in the limited overs Trophy against Berkshire in 2011.

His feat helped Cumberland make up for the absence of Richard Gleeson, who was making his First-Class debut for Northamptonshire against Australia.

Opener Josh Tolley then helped Cumberland establish a first innings lead of 161, hitting a fluent 88 off 102 balls with 10 fours and a six.

Williams and Toby Bulcock each made 31 and Will Hale 28 as Cambridgeshire captain Paul McMahon, so often a thorn in Cumberland's side, took 6 for 84 in 36 overs.

The former Notts off-spinner ended the season with 46 Championship wickets and is four ahead of Bulcock.

Bulcock helped put the skids under the home side's second innings by bowling opener Peter Richer just before lunch on the second day. Williams took two further wickets to make it a personal 10 for the game before player/coach Chris Hodgson took over.

The Wigton professional left Cambs' hopes of making Cumberland bat again in tatters, surpassing even McMahon's notable efforts.

In 12.4 overs, Hodgson's off-spin collected six wickets for 30 runs, his best analysis for the county.

Cambridgeshire were dismissed for 102 second time around, losing their last eight wickets for only 29 runs as Cumberland completed their victory in five sessions.

With heavy rain falling throughout Tuesday, any hopes of play on the third day would have been ruined by the weather.

Meanwhile, Buckinghamshire went down to a heavy defeat by 255 runs against defending champions Stafforshire at Knypersley and so Cumberland topped the Eastern Division by the impressive margin of 31 points.

Cumberland won five of their six Championship games, the other being a rain-ruined draw and have now won nine and drawn three of their last 12 three-day games.

Unicorns Championship at Saffron Walden: Cambs 110 (C Williams 8 for 47) and 102 (CJ Hodgson 6 for 30), Cumberland 271 (JR Tolley 88, PJ McMahon 6 for 84). Cumberland won by an innings and 59 runs.
