A NEW home provided the perfect platform for success for Barrow and Furness Striders’ young athletes.

The team took to the track – and field – at Furness Academy for the first athletics meeting in the town for 19 years.

In windy conditions, the Cumbria League meeting proved a big success for the hosts, with athletes from under-11s to under-20s levels claiming medals.

In the youngest age group, Lucas Seal was fourth in the 70m final in a time of 10.91 seconds. He also jumped 2.97m in the long jump.

James Cresswell finished fifth in the 600m in 2:08.4 and jumped 3.17m in the long jump, while Albin Binu ran both the 70m and 600m and leapt to 3.02m in the long jump.

Finley Corkill took fifth in the 70m and was sixth in the 600m in 2.09.01 and jumped 2.74m in the long jump.

New member Lucas Farren – with the Striders for just two weeks – showed real promise with a long jump of 2.80m and a 600m time of 2:33.0. He also finished fourth in a heat of the 70m.

For the girls, Laura Brown won her heat of the 70m and was fifth in the final in 11.5 seconds. She was third in the 600m in 2.06.7 and finished in the same position in the long jump with an effort of 3.31m.

Rebecca O’Donovan won her heat of the 70m and finished sixth in the final in 11.51 seconds. She was also sixth in the 600m in 2:15.2 and jumped 2.99m for seventh place in the long jump.

Rosie Murray was fifth in her heat of 70m and ran 2:17.0 for seventh in the 600m. She jumped 2.76m in the long jump.

Sophie Milburn was fourth in the 70m heat and jumped 2.54m in the long jump, while Natasha Crow was fifth in her heat of the 70m, ran 2:25.0 in the 600m and jumped 2.48m in the long jump.

The girls team finished third in the relay.

In the under-13s boys, Ryan Wilson won the 80m in 10.8 seconds and doubled up with success in the discus, throwing 15.7m.

Luke Broadbent was second in the high jump with 1.2m, third in the 150m as he clocked 21.8 seconds and third in long jump, with a best effort of 4.08m.

Jake Cullen was a place better off than Broadbent in the long jump, as he took second with 4.17m. He was a spot behind his team-mate in the high jump though, with his height of 1.2m seeing him finish third. Fifth place in the 80m in a time of 12.1 seconds rounded off his day.

Harvey Cooper finished third in the 800m after crossing the line in 2:33.9, with a fourth-placed finish in the javelin (12.45m) and sixth in long jump (3.74m) making up his results.

Reece Cresswell came home fourth in the 800m in 2.42.4 and was just off the podium again with fourth in the high jump (1.15m). He finished fifth in the long jump with 3.8m.

The last of the under-13s boys, Tobey Wilson, achieved third in the javelin with a throw of 14.6m and took a second bronze with third in the shot as he threw 6m. He also jumped 3.02m in the long jump. The boys finished second in their relay event.

Amy Lovidge won her heat of the under-13s girls 80m and was fourth in the final with a time of 11.9 seconds.

Rebecca Pearce finished third in the shot with 4.87m and jumped 2.98 in the long jump, while Holly Murray was fourth in the javelin (12.8m), sixth in the 800m (2:55.3) and fourth in her heat of the 150m.

Hallie Irving took fifth place in her heat of the 150m with a time of 29.5, sixth in her 80m heat and jumped 2.34m in the long jump.

The girls team finished fifth in the relay.

Striders’ under-15 girls had a fine day, with Rebecca Keen winning two events.

She took top spot in the high jump after clearing 1.52m, finished first in the long jump with 4.67m and came home third in the final of the 200m in 28.0 seconds.

Millie Chadwick leapt to second in the high jump with a new personal best of 1.40m. She also finished fourth in the long jump (4.43m) and in the final of the 200m, timing 29.6 seconds, having run 29.0 in the heats.

Gabby Wheeler ran to third in the 100m final in 14.0 seconds (after running 13.9 seconds in the heats), was fourth in the high jump (1.20m) and fifth in long jump (4.35m).

At under-15s boys level, Jordan Faulkner had an excellent day.

He topped the podium in the high jump with a clearance of 1.67m, was second in the 100m in 12.5 seconds and again in the 200m in 26.5 seconds.

Jack Cooper was second in the high jump (1.20m) and sixth in the javelin (21.24m).

Another Barrow athlete having an excellent day was under-17s Strider Thomas Edmonds. He claimed a hat-trick of wins in the discus (29.71m), javelin (35.35m) and shot putt (11.03m).

Also in good form was Josh Campbell, who took the high jump after clearing 1.65m and won the 400m in 54.7 seconds. He was also second in the 100m with a time of 12.3 seconds.

Nathan Brown finished second in the long jump with a distance of 4.14m, third in high jump (1.35m) and third in the 400m (64.7 seconds).

Murray Murray took second spot in the 800m in 2:15.6.

Georgia Cooper was second in the girls 200m in 28.91 seconds, fourth in long jump (4.14m) and fifth in the shot (7.62m), while Olivia Bradley was sixth in 100m in 14.2 seconds and took the same finishing spot in the shot (7.02m).

At under-20s level, Abby Hempsall crossed the line second in the 100m (13.4 seconds) and third in 200m (27.4 seconds).

Adam Bailey, nursing a slight injury, still managed to win the 100m in 11.3 seconds.

Striders finished as the third team overall.

Barrow and Furness Striders train on Monday and Thursday evenings at the Furness Academy track, on Park Drive, Barrow. The under-11s train between 5.30pm and 6.30pm, with all other ages from 6.30pm until 8pm.
