BARROW and Furness Striders ace Ross Campbell claimed victory in the under-20s race at the opening Mid Lancs Cross Country League event of the season.

Campbell was the first runner home in his age category in Chorley in a time of 36:20.

That was good enough for 11th overall in the senior men’s race, with Striders’ Phil Waite finishing third in the main race in 34:48 and Barrow team-mate Jed Bartlett eighth in 35:47.

Border Harriers’ James Douglas won in 34:00.

The second under-20s athlete home was Joshua Ingham, of Pendle AC, in 37:45, while Striders’ Ryan Everett finished 10th in 40:56.

It was a good effort by Everett, who finished 54th overall in his debut senior race.

Murray Murray also produced a good performance, as he crossed the line as the fifth-best under-17s male competitor in 23:59.

Striders finished fourth in the senior men’s team event, although they were third in Division One as the best team, Barlick, are only in Division Two.

Jill Seddon was Striders’ best performer in the over-18s women’s race, producing a time of 29:33 to finish 33rd, with Barrow 10th in the team event.
