RUGBY league ace Brad Singleton was the toast of Cumbria last night as he was crowned the Cumbria Sports Personality of the Year.

Barrow’s Leeds Rhinos prop, who was part of the history-making side which won the Challenge Cup, Super League Leaders’ Shield and Grand Final, led a raft of South Cumbrian winners as the area dominated the ceremony at Low Wood Bay Hotel, Ambleside.

England Under-17s captain and Manchester City Women’s Super League hotshot Georgia Stanway was named Junior Personality of the Year at the Active Cumbria event, while the North Walney Primary School Year 5 and 6 football team, who won the national Danone Cup, were the Junior Team of the Year.

Hawcoat Park rugby union stalwart Jeff Simm was honoured with the Service to Sport award, while England cerebral palsy footballer Jake Brown collected the Disability Performance Of the Year prize for the second year in succession.

Ulverston Tri Club’s Paul McKenny was named Coach of the Year, Walney Windcheetah’s Suzanne Boyle earned the Volunteer of the Year award and England basketballer Millie Knowles was among the rising stars.

From outside the area, Cumberland County Cricket Club took the Team of the Year and hammer thrower Nick Miller claimed the Performance of the Year prize.

Active Cumbria’s Richard Johnston hailed all the winners, and said: “The awards were a superb event and an excellent opportunity to celebrate the enormous effort and talents of the sporting stars of Cumbria.

“We had some excellent nominations and I know our judging panel had a real task to choose all of the deserving winners.

“It just goes to show what great talent and dedication to sport that we have in the county.”

Barrow Island product Singleton took the main prize after helping the Rhinos win the Challenge Cup with a try in the 50-0 win over Hull KR in the final at Wembley.

Simm’s Service to Sport Award recognises the roles he has played at Hawcoat Park over the past 50 years.

A rugby union player, captain and coach, he is the only player to gain full county honours from the club. As a coach, he led the club and county and also worked in schools with children.

Stanway was named Junior Sports Personality of the Year after 12 months in which she has signed for Manchester City and led her country.

The Barrow ace made the move to City from Blackburn and played in the senior team in the Women’s Super League, scoring twice alongside full international team-mates.

She also captained England Under-17s and netted seven goals in three qualifying matches for the European Championships.

The footballers from North Walney also had a year to remember with victory in the Danone Small Schools Cup. They defeated teams from across the country to land the trophy.

Fellow junior Knowles was named a Rising Star after playing for England in the Under-16s European Championships and earning an under-18s national call-up.

McKenny’s prize came on the back of his work with Ulverston Tri Club, where he has brought through a number of athletes at the fledgling club to international standard.

Boyle, meanwhile, is one of the run leaders with Walney Windcheetahs and helped set up the club’s junior section.

Brown is an established member of the England Cerebral Palsy squad and this year represented them at the World Championships, scoring four times to help England to victories over USA, Japan, and the Republic of Ireland. He is training hard to gain selection for the GB Paralympic squad for Rio.
