CHILDREN dodged showers and fast-flying balls as they enjoyed a range of sports at a summer holiday camp.

Onside Sports coach Brian Dawson and his team delivered a week of multi-sport activities at Thwaites School, near Millom.

Youngsters were able to take part in familiar games such as football, while also trying their hand at dodgeball, basketball, hockey and basketball – among others – across action-packed days.

The school hall came in handy as rain fell outside, meaning there was no disruption as the keen kids tried their hands at various activities.

Dawson was happy to see them all joining in enthusiastically, and said: “We do a range of different sports and we tend to mainly do games, rather than do coaching.

“We have a little sports day where we do Olympic-style events and we cover a wide range of sports.

“Probably some of them have never picked up a hockey stick, a golf club or a tennis racket. Some of them never get the opportunity to handle these things and it’s really good for them to get an insight.

“You see some kids who maybe aren’t good at football, but they pick up a tennis racket or a cricket bat and you can see straight away that’s going to be their niche. It has been really successful. The football camps are still successful, but you do get different children coming to the multi-sports.”

Onside have run a series of football and multi-sport workshops for primary school children throughout the holidays in Copeland, with sessions based around Millom, Egremont and Seascale.

They will continue to work within schools after the holidays are over, running some teams and delivering classes.

“We’ve had a really good summer and it has been successful,” added Dawson, a former semi-professional footballer with Barrow AFC and Kendal Town.

“We’ve dodged the showers with being indoors. It also makes it easier to do a wider range of sports.”
