FAIRWAY-TAMING big-hitter Adam Chapman swung his way to the top in the defence of his North of England Amateur Strokeplay Championship.

The Windermere Golf Club ace compiled rounds of 64 and 69 at Pannal Golf Club to win by two shots.

Chapman, a member of the England Elite Squad – who was in contention for a spot in the Great Britain and Ireland Walker Cup side this year – saw off the threat of Jack Gaunt, of Drayton Park, and Lindrick’s Bailey Gill.

With nine birdies in the first round and four in the second, Chapman, who has had a disappointing season, was delighted to have retained his crown.

“I’m very pleased to have won again at Pannal and it’s a nice finish to the season.” he said of his success in Yorkshire. “I knew it was coming, because I’ve been working harder than ever on my game.

“I’ve been trying out a few new things and also have a new putter in the bag, which worked particularly well in the first round.

“I also had my dad caddying for me, which always helps a great deal.”

Despite the weather being fine and playing conditions soft, the competition, originally scheduled as a three-day event, was reduced to 36 holes due to thick morning fog, which refused to lift.

That played right into Chapman’s hands, with no-one able to match his 133, 11-under-par total.
