SPECTACULAR dance routines, colourful superheroes and fun activities were just some of the highlights at a community extravaganza.

Families and friends took the sun to enjoy a host of fun-filled activities and games at Walney Gala.

The annual event welcomed residents and visitors alike to take part in the family fun day.

With more than 50 dance acts taking centre stage and a variety of stalls and activities surrounding the field, Walney Gala had something for everyone this weekend.

Pauline Jeffrey, of Ainslie Street, Barrow, said: “My granddaughter dances for Dance Fever so we’ve come to see her.

“It’s something we always do.

“It’s also nice to get the chance to catch up with people.”

Sarah Wightman, of Walney, said: “My daughter wanted to dance in it.

“She’s just turned five and this is her third year.

“I think especially from my partner’s point of view it’s a generational thing.

“His mum did it, his sisters did and now it’s been passed down the line.”

Tori Millis, a teacher at Dance Fusion, added: “We’ve been doing this for six years now and it’s alway fun and it raises a lot of money for local charities.”

Walney Gala also welcomed this year’s king, Harvey Spence, 10, queen, Heather Kilburn, 12, prince, Kyle Pope, 7, and princess, Esme McMullen, 6.

Signal Film and Media, a charity based in Abbey Road, Barrow, which provides opportunities for film and digital skills learning, also showed a short film documenting the fun that was had at last year's event. Various charities such as the Community First Responders, were also on hand to give advice and answer questions and staff from Argos will be selling tickets for a tombola in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. Chris Fagan, of Walney Island Community First Responders, said: “It helps with the upkeep of what the team does so it’s a good way for us to come back and say thank you to them and raise awareness of what we do. “It also means people can come and learn how to do CPR.” This year's event is being organised by North Walney Primary School's PTA, with money raised going towards school funds and various local good causes. Nicola Bland, a senior teaching assistant at the school and one of the organisers of the event, believes it’s an important part of the community.

She said: “We just wanted to provide a real family fun day.

“It was going to be cancelled everyone from North Walney decided we would take it on.

“It’s a great event - it takes a lot of organising but it’s definitely worth it.”

Mrs Bland also wanted to thank everyone who showed their support for the event.

She explained: “We’ve had a lot of support from parents and teachers and local businesses.

“It’s sponsored by NP Removals and the owner is a dad at the school.

“BAE Systems have come to do our first aid so we’re really grateful to them as well

“Amec Foster Wheeler did the programmes and Little and Caine provided the car for the Gala king, queen, prince and princess, so everyone has been really supportive.”

Leanne McMullan, another teaching assistant at the school, added: “It’s a massive fundraiser for us and a lovely community event.

“It brings everyone together which is something that doesn’t happen very much anymore.”
