WE are hoping Memories Page readers can tell us more about this century-old postcard which is thought to show early players for a Furness soccer team - possibly Barrow AFC.

The card which looks to be from around 1905 to 1910 was kindly provided by Audrey Patterson, of Whinfield Place, Askam.

Her grandfather Joseph “Joe” Fitzjohn is the only name we have among the players – he is on the front row, second from the right.

Mrs Patterson thought the players might be from Barrow Rugby League Club due to the distinctive “V” on the shirts.

However, a count of the players in kit has 10 outfield players and a goal keeper in a light coloured shirt – giving the 11 players needed for an association football team.

She believes he played for "Barrow" - but in the era before and after the First World War the town had many school "old boy", office, shipyard and even Railway teams playing in local and regional leagues

Mr Fitzjohn was a miner and moved around a fair bit, including a spell in the African gold fields.

He later lived at Sharp Street, Askam.

There is no comprehensive list for Barrow AFC players in the years from the club's formation in 1901 to around 1920.

There is no Fitzjohn family listed in the 1911 census for Askam but there was a Joseph Fitzjohn, then aged 25, who was a plater’s helper at the shipyard and was living in Barrow.

In the 1891 census he was living at Lonsdale Road, Millom.

His father was Henry George Fitjohn who was born at Whitehaven and lived from 1846 to 1888.

The death of a Joseph Fitzjohn, aged 64, was registered in Ulverston in December 1949.
