THE seventh Duke of Devonshire provided the money behind much of Barrow's dramatic industrial growth from the mid-19th century.
William Cavendish lived from 1808 to 1891 and is closely associated with Holker Hall, near Cark.
He was Lord Cavendish of Keighley from 1831 to 1834; Earl of Burlington to 1858 and then Duke of Devonshire.
He was a landlord. mine royalty owner and founder of Burlington Slate Quarries - now Burlington Stone at Kirkby.
The Duke of Devonshire invested heavily in the Furness Railway, Barrow docks and its steelworks and juteworks.
He was also an MP and Lord-lieutenant of both Lancashire and Derbyshire.
