PRINCESS Margaret came to town on June 13 in 1967 to help celebrate the centenary of the charter of incorporation for Barrow.

She visited the town hall to meet civic leaders and attended a luncheon.

She referred to her visit as a "birthday celebration".

The princess unveiled a commemorative plaque in the town hall, visited Abbey House to chat to residents and toured South Newbarns Ciounty Junior School.

The afternoon saw a visit to Barrow shipyard and a chance to inspect the Polaris nuclear missile submarine Resolution before leaving by plane from Walney airfield.

The front page of the Evening Mail noted: "Civic pride swept through the century-old borough of Barrow as thousands of people lining the town centre streets gave a rousing Lancashire welcome to Princess Margaret.

"The princess flew to Walney airport to give a Royal highlight to Barrow's centenary year celebrations.

"Children from Barrow's primary schools were in high spirits for they were given the afternoon off in recognition of the Royal visit."
