FIRE crews were called out to tackle a fire that raged through a picnic area.

Walney fire crew were called out following reports that decking had been deliberately set on fire near the coastguard tower in Mill Lane, on Walney.

The firefighters found the picnic area had been set alight and was producing thick, black smoke.

Crew manager Si Morgan said: “The fire engine was mobilised at around 7.40pm. When we got to the area it was well alight due to the material it was made of. We realised that we couldn’t deal with the fire with just the one engine and we sent for a second appliance from Barrow.”

The fire took hold in an area made of reclaimed car tyres, which when burnt gave off toxic smoke.

Firefighters were tackling the blaze on Saturday for around an hour-and-a-half.

The fire is believed to have been started deliberately and police attended the scene at 8.20pm.

Tony Frankowski, 65, of Eamont Close, Walney said he now visited the meadow and pond in nearby North Scale because the area near Mill Lane was targeted by vandals.

He said: “Many years ago there were all sorts of wildlife in that area. The council spent a lot of money on it but now it is just like a dumping ground. There is no pride in it at all and the council should hang their heads in shame.

“It is such a shame that this has happened and will only prevent more wildlife coming to the area and there will be a lot of people losing out.

“It should be restored and put back the way it used to be. It is such a shame for all the people who could enjoy it.”

Cumbria police are investigating the incident and are urging any witnesses to come forward.

Anyone with any information is urged to call Cumbria police on 101 or alternatively contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
