RESIDENTS say they have been given the runaround as they try to establish who is responsible for a street light on a dangerous bend.

Tony Dunford said he has tried for nine months to get an answer but no-one will take responsibility.

The 64-year-old of Weaver Green, Walney, explained: “It was initially put out of action when it was knocked down by a wagon and the council made it safe.

“They removed the old one and and put up a new lamp standard – but it has never worked. I went to Barrow Borough Council but they told me to speak to the county council, which I did.

“They told me it was Electricity North West. They were very nice when I called them, but said that is was the reponsibility of the highways department.

“We have been given the runaround for four months now and the light has been out of action for nine.

“No-one will accept responsibility. It’s extremely frustrating. If it wasn’t, it would be comical. Tradesmean keep turning up in twos and then nothing is done.

“The reason I and my neighbours are so concerned is that it is on the corner of a busy junction at Windrush Crecsent where lots of cars are parked on one side.

“It’s very dark at night without this light and we fear an accident could happen as it can be a bit dodgy.

“My neighbour, Jack Barnes, goes to see his step-daughter every night and has to cross the road and he’s in his late 60s.

“It’s a dangerous corner.”

Electricity North West said they had been the sub-contractors and there had been an issue with incorrect cables but that had now been rectified.

They said they had informed the county council on April 14 that they had corrected any problems and the ball was now in their court to get the light working.

Cumbria County Council were unavailable for comment.
