History

In the early 20th century, farms were more diverse than today.

Most farmers raised many different crops and cared for a variety of animals.

Farmers planted corn, oats, wheat and barley, and raised cattle and hogs while women planted large gardens of potatoes, carrots, lettuce, pumpkins, beans and radishes.

They also cared for chickens and sold eggs.

Throughout the 20th century, as machinery developed, farms began to grow bigger.

As they got bigger, they also tended to become less diverse.

Many farmers raised just corn and soybeans while others raised cattle with some field crops.

Being a successful farmer today requires knowledge of advanced technology, educational preparation and business skills.

One thing remains the same about agriculture today as it did centuries ago: farm families own and operate farms.

Whether it is your next door neighbour or a farm miles away from you, farmers and their families are working hard to bring healthy and affordable food to your dinner plate.

Every dog – and puppy – will have its day in the show ring

IF your dog can do cool tricks make sure you bring them along on show day.

The popular Alice’s Dog Show has classes for dogs of all shapes and sizes.

The event originates from the bucket list of the late Alice Pyne. Alice wanted to exhibit her labrador Mabel at a dog show. Cathy and Simon Broomfield of Verstone Kennels, made this happen and the event became part of the agricultural show.

Verstone Kennels, Mascalles and WCF Pet and Equestrian Centre, Ulverston are the sponsors.

Entries are taken ringside from 10.30am and judging by Maria Murray starts at noon.

It costs £3 to enter first class and subsequent classes with the same dog then cost £1.

Top chefs will show how to make a meal of it

Craig Sherrington NEW to the show this year is the Food Hall with live chef demonstrations and local produce on sale.

Craig Sherrington, chef and landlord of the General Burgoyne, in Urswick, has put together a schedule of chefs who will be doing cooking demonstrations using local produce being sold by more than 20 local food producers. The food theatre is expected to seat around 70 people or more.

Craig will be demonstrating how to make three courses in 45 minutes, using foods such as traditional Cumberland sausage produced by Peter Gott.

Mr Sherrington said: “I was approached, being a local business in the village, about having a food hall. I think it will be awesome.

“There will be a chance for the visitors to try what we have made and we will have interaction with the stalls. The food hall has been very well supported.”
