A MOTORIST who killed a student nurse and seriously injured her cousin by dangerous driving has been jailed today.

Jessica Quayle Kyle Braithwaite, 25, caused the death of Jessica Quayle and serious injuries to Sandy Nevinson in Mountbarrow Road, Ulverston, on July 7 2014.

He was sentenced to five years and nine months for causing the Dalton student's death and 30 months for causing life-threatening injuries to her cousin.

The court heard that Brathwaite was travelling between 52 and 58mph on the stretch of road, despite coming up to a blind bend.

He collided into both women as they walked northwards towards Ulverston.

Miss Quayle died at the scene and Miss Nevinson was airlifted to hospital and continues to undergo surgery.

During sentencing, Her Honour Judge Beech said: "You didn't give any thought to the safety of the other road users, other drivers or pedestrians when you embarked on your course of conduct."

The sentences will run concurrently, meaning Brathwaite's sentence is five years and nine months.

He is due to serve half of the jail term before being released on licence.

There was no sentence made against a third charge of cannabis possession.
