TWO men who volunteer their time to transport live saving treatments to hospitals have been nominated for a Heart of Ulverston award.

Edgar Baines and Ian Clark from Ulverston both volunteer with Blood Bikes. 

Blood Bikes is a national charity that provide voluntary motorcycle courier services to hospitals and other healthcare providers, to help with the transport of urgent blood, tissue and organs.

Mr Baines and Mr Clark are with the North West Blood Bikes Lancs and Lakes branch and go between Furness General Hospital, Westmorland General Hospital and Royal Lancaster Infirmary.

They were nominated for the Helping Hand award by fellow blood biker, John Walker. 

Mr Walker said: "Both Edgar and Ian help out with North West Blood Bikes Lancs & Lakes charity by riding their motorcycles between hospitals in the middle of the night or at weekends. 

"Edgar also acts as controller looking after blood bikers all over the North West.  

"This is all done for the charity free of charge."

Mr Baines who has volunteered with Blood Bikes for a year and a half thinks the recognition is "great".

He said: "The large team of people who cover a very large area do a lot of great work. 

"I love being involved and this type of work keeps my brain active. 

"It's great being in a team of over 200-300 people who are all willing to help." 

There are 11 categories this year which include, Citizen of the Year, Community Group/Project, Teacher, Sports Volunteer, Lifetime Acievement Award, Young Sports Performance of the Year – Under 18, Young Citizen of the Year, Helping Hand Award, Courage Award, Environmental Volunteer and Employee of the Year. 

Nominees in all 11 categories will be given the red carpet treatment at a glamourous awards night at the Coronation Hall on October 9. 

A New category has been added this year and this is Young Sports Performance of the Year – Under 18 and this recognises the outstanding sporting performance across any discipline through 2014/2015. 

The career category has been renamed and it is now known as the Helping Hand Award, so whether it is a neighbour who gets your weekly shop, a volunteer at a local group or anything in between, this is the award for them.
