RESIDENTS left wondering where all the flowers have gone in their town have finally received an answer - and an apology from the council.

Floral displays around Ulverston have gradually disappeared since spring, with empty flower bedding at various locations including Tank Square, Ulverston Cemetery and to the side of Coronation Hall.

South Lakeland District Council have taken responsibility for the neglected displays and have said sorry for the delays in planting this summer's shrubs.

Pat Appleton, a member of Ulverston in Bloom, was left disappointed by the neglected parts of the town which are devoid of any plants and colour.

She said: "At the last (Ulverston in Bloom) meeting there was quite a lot of disgruntled people because we have got a lot of empty summer bedding.

"It was letting the town down by South Lakeland District Council not fulfilling their side of the bargain.

"It was beautiful in the spring with daffodils so when drivers then carry on to Barrow and see such great displays it doesn't sell the town very well.

"(The council have) admitted it was a lack of communication and they apologised and they just need to now put things right and also hopefully for the autumn and winter."

Some residents were fearful the council had withdrawn responsibility for maintaining the plots to save money in their budget, however officials say they hope to resolve the matter and fill the flower beds.

Lawrence Conway, South Lakeland District Council chief executive, said he understood the concerns of residents.

Mr Conway said: “We apologise for the delays in delivering these new planting schemes in Ulverston this summer, and we understand the frustrations that have been expressed.

“We are meeting with representatives from Ulverston in Bloom on September 7 when we will look to rectify this situation.

"We look forward to working together with Ulverston in Bloom volunteers and Ulverston Town Council to discuss the most appropriate planting schemes for these areas.’’
