LANTERN-MAKING workshops for a town’s annual parade will begin on Friday.

Ulverston Lantern Festival committee has organised the workshops for members of the public to create their own lanterns. This year’s theme is “out of the toybox”.

Swarthmoor Reading Rooms is hosting workshops on Friday from 6pm to 8pm and Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 4pm.

Ulverston Parish Rooms in Church Walk is hosting workshops on Friday from 5.30pm to 8.30pm, Saturday and Sunday from noon to 6pm, and then Monday to Friday next week from 5.30pm to 8.30pm.

Organisers ask for £5 per lantern, or a larger donation for super-sized creations.

This year’s parade, the culmination of the town’s charter celebrations and a Medieval fair, takes place on Saturday September 12.

Four processions will converge to form a “river of light” which makes its way through the town centre, starting at 8.25pm outside the Coronation Hall.

The procession finishes at Ford Park where the Community Spark light graffiti finale will be performed using dance and circus skills, followed by the traditional firework display.

Those taking part in the parade are asked to assemble at either Ulverston Parish Church from 7.15pm; Croflands Community Centre from 7.15pm; the Auction Mart yard from 7.30pm; or Hillfoot Hotel from 7.45pm.

Roads and car parks in the town centre will be closed from 7pm to 10pm, and delays are expected on the A590.

The no street drinking zone in the town centre and Ford Park will be lifted during the event until 10pm.
