A SCIENTIST and TV star left the lab for a day to officially open an Ulverston school’s new library.

And if the children were not excited enough at the prospect of their new book heaven, they certainly were once CBBC star Greg Foot set foot in their school.

Headteacher of Church Walk Primary School, Susan Davies said: “It was a really successful day. The children got to put lots of questions to Greg which he was happy to answer.

“People seemed pleased with the new library and the children are looking forward to borrowing books from it which they will be able to do from this week.”

The school has been raising money to pay for the £10,000 cost of the library revamp. Senior staff decided to take action because the old library was in need of an overhaul.

Mrs Davies said: “As we now have Junior children, the main aim is to develop the stock of books for Key Stage Two and also extend the range of books for infants.”

The revamp included shelving being replaced, additional storage space being added and new seating. Children helped to pick the final design.

The Friends of Church Walk led a number of fundraising events including a Christmas fair, quiz night, and barbecue. Businesses also contributed towards the cost, with the Leeds Building Society pledging £1,000 and GSK donating £450. The Roger Sawrey Trust has also provided books.

Pupil Joe Williamson, aged six, said: “The library is awesome and it has new comfy seats. Greg was really good and he knew a lot about science. He told us lots of good facts.”

Isobel Gifford, aged seven, said: “I like history books and I am looking forward to going to the new library. It is good to have lots of new books.”
