THE sun made a welcome appearance as dozens of families turned out to celebrate home grown produce at a town’s apple day.

Ulverston’s apple day was held in Ford Park on Saturday with plenty to keep the whole family entertained.

Children were spoiled for choice with apple decorating, story telling, games and crafts while parents could enjoy some of the many home-baked cakes on sale.

With the whole day focused around the apple harvest, there were plenty of apple-related activities, including apple pressing, along with food and drink.

Volunteer coordinator, Cat Moffatt, said: “The day was all about celebrating the apple harvest so we have had absolutely tonnes of activities going on which are all apple themed – even down to the zorbing down at the bottom, which are almost like 3D apples that people can climb inside.

“It is so important to bring the community together and one of the things that we are promoting as a park is grow your own and utilising locally sourced ingredients, and today is mostly all about that.”

Alex Blackmore, from the Ulverston Scrap Store was busy helping children create apples using baubles, coloured paper and glue.

When the children had finished with their rosy apples, they were able to stick them on to a painted apple tree.

Mr Blackmore, said: “It has been a really good day, much bigger than last year and it should get busier as the day goes on.”

Jo Steel, from Crosthwaite, brought along her five-year-old daughter Norah who was busy getting stuck into apple-related arts and crafts.

She said: “We have come out to support the local community. It is a very community-based in Ulverston with all the gardens being kept by volunteers and there’s lots here for the kids to do. What more could you want?”

Filling Ford Park with music was Ulverston’s home-grown community street band Blast Furness while Legs Levens, the Levens-based Appalachian dance group put on performances throughout the day.
