A NEW development, costing around £5m, could see a Premier Inn hotel being built on the site of a former abbatoir.

The site on North Lonsdale Terrace in Ulverston has been vacant for a number of years and Premier Inn are looking to built a hotel and in-house restaurant on the site.

The proposal, which includes 79 bedrooms and 68 car parking spaces, will be on display to the public at an exhibition on Thursday December 3 at the Coronation Hall in Ulverston.

The multi-million pound investment will be coming from Whitbread, Premier Inn’s parent company and if the new hotel is given the go-ahead will see the creation of around 30 new jobs – part-time and full-time.

Planning consultancy firm, Turley, are leading the public consultation on the scheme at the Coro on Thursday from 2pm to 6pm.

Nick Johnston, Acquisition Manager at Whitbread Hotels and Restaurants, who is leading the project said: “We believe that we will bring a lot of positive benefits to Ulverston.

"The hotel will unlock a stalled site and contribute to the regeneration of the east of the town.

"Our hotel will help bring thousands of additional visitors to Ulverston throughout the year and we will create approximately 30 new jobs in the local area.

"We’re looking to invest in Ulverston for the long-term and I’m looking forward to displaying our latest plans to residents and members, and hearing their views.”

Turley have been working with South Lakeland District Council on the designs and a planning application is expected to be submitted to the council by the end of the year.

The www.premierinnulverston.co.uk website will be live from today and Ulverston residents will receive a letter about the proposal, as well as posters being placed around the town.
