A CHARITY walk which at its peak raised more than £70,000 is set to take a break after its tenth anniversary.

St Mary’s Walk To Remember will take a break after the final walk next summer which sees hundreds of women walk in the moonlight to raise funds for St Mary’s Hospice in Ulverston.

The event, which has just welcomed its ninth year, will take its final bow on Friday June 10 2016.

This year almost 400 women walked from Hawcoat Park in Barrow, raising £335,000.

Head of income generation at St Mary’s Hospice, Zoe Guest, said: “We have decided to give it a break after the next year coming.

“We have noticed that the numbers have dropped over the past few years and from looking at research and speaking to people, they have told us that we should do something else.

“A lot of people have come here and have said to us that they are looking for a new event.”

With it being the walk’s tenth birthday, the hospice has decided to go with an anniversary theme.

Mrs Guest said: “The theme for next year is 10. It will be our tenth anniversary so the walk will be ten miles and it will take place on June 10.

“We will be very sad to see it go, but it’s more ‘au revoir’ than goodbye.

“We have been so successful in this event but we think we really must give it a rest now and try something new.

“During that time we will be working on our next big event but we do want to see out our 10 years.

“The name for next year’s walk will be ‘Never forget the Walk to Remember’. The door won’t be closed for good.”

Describing next year’s fundraiser, Mrs Guest said: “We couldn’t possibly say what the next event will be; people will have to wait and see. We want people to know that it is not the end of the Walk to Remember.”
