THE sun made a welcome arrival as dozens of families turned out to celebrate home grown produce at an apple day extravaganza.

Ulverston's apple gala day was held in Ford Park yesterday with plenty to keep the whole family entertained.

Children were spoiled for choice with apple decorating, story telling, games and crafts while parents milled around enjoying some of the many apple inspired cakes on sale.

With the whole day focused around the apple harvest, there was plenty of apple related activities, food and drinks for everyone to enjoy.

Volunteer coordinator, Cat Moffatt, said: "The day was all about celebrating the apple harvest so we have had absolutely tonnes of activities going on all apple themed.

"It is so important to bring the community together and one of the things that we are promoting as a park is grow your own and utilising locally sourced ingredients and today is mostly about that."

Alex Blackmore from the Ulverston Scrap store was busy helping children create apples using baubles, coloured paper and glue. When the children had finished with their rosy apples, they were able to stick them on to a painted apple tree.

Mr Blackmore, said: "It has been a really good day. Much bigger than last year."

Jo Steel from Crosthwaite brought along her five-year-old daughter Norah who was busy getting stuck into apple related arts and crafts.

She said: "We have come out to support the local community. It is a very community based in Ulverston with all the gardens being kept by volunteers and there's lots here for the kids to do. What more could you want."

Filling Ford Park with the sounds of a trumpets and saxophones were Ulverston's home grown jazz band Furness Blast while Legs Levens, the Levens based Appalachian dance group put on various performances throughout the day.
