FIREFIGHTERS tackled a blaze in Ulverston in the early hours of this morning.

Crews were called to a residential property in Soutergate following a 999 call at 3.40am.

Three fire engines initially attended the blaze which involved the third floor of the property and the aerial ladder platform was also requested.

Firefighters had to withdraw from the building at one point due to the ceiling collapsing on the first floor.

Occupants, including animals, on both sides of the building were evacuated and the crews wore breathing apparatus and used one main jet and one hose reel to fight the fire.

Two more fire engines were requested.

A police spokesman said there are no suspicious circumstances at this time and no injuries reported.
