AN impressive display of sporting prowess raised thousands of pounds for a community gym class.

Millom Recreation Centre raised £2,257 from its gymnastic display.

Around 140 children from across Cumbria took part in the event to showcase their skills  to almost 400 people.

Tracy Kirk, manager of Millom Recreation Centre, was delighted by the success of the event.

She said: "It's a fundraising event that we hold every year and all the money we get goes back towards equipment for the gym.

"Because it's only been running for three years we're still building up our equipment. We still need equipment to progress the children in the future.

"We enter quite a lot of competitions as well so it all helps."

In addition to the display, the club handed out a number of awards recognise the achievements of some of the most talented children in the group.

Almost 150 children from across south and west Cumbria travel to Millom to take part in the gym classes and Mrs Kirk believes it's a great facility for the area.

She said: "It's just a great way for children to get together and it's great for physical development.

"It's a great way to make friends and have fun."
