A THEATRE boss surrendered her curls and raised more than £3000 for charity.

Jakki Moore, owner and artistic director at The Beggar's Theatre, in Millom, took to the stage last week to have her head shaved and raise money for Cancer Research UK.

The event at the Market Square venue last Friday also included stand-up comedians, musical performers, games and a raffle.

Ms Moore said: "I am overwhelmed with the support from our brilliant community to my charity head shave event last week.

"Raising money for Cancer Research UK is close to everybody's heart, we have all been touched in some form by Cancer.

"I wasn't expecting such amazing support from performers, audience, local businesses and sponsors that I received, and thank you to everyone who has sponsored me and continues to drop money through my door, at the theatre and even gives me it in Tesco.

"Also for those still sponsoring me online, who left money in the boxes around the theatre on Friday night, bought raffle tickets, tickets to the show, played Stand-Up Bingo and Heads and Tails - it was great fun.

"And thanks to all the wonderful, amazing performers who played on Friday night for all your generosity.

"We have counted up so far and have raised £3000, but I know there is still sponsor money to come in and people are still giving me money.

"My hair will grow back - it is already coming back - and cancer will one day be beaten but until then, we need to do all we can to raise money for research and care of those who are not so lucky."

Ms Moore made the decision to part with her curly blonde hair during the summer when her father began to lose his hair through radiotherapy, having been diagnosed with cancer two years ago.
