A SELLAFIELD worker has been banned from the roads for 18-months for drink driving after a Bonfire night out.

Jamie Christopher Kershaw, of Festival Road, Millom, appeared before Furness Magistrates' Court this week.

He was twice the legal limit.

Prosecutor Mr Lee Dacre said: "It was in the early hours of November 6 when on-duty police saw the defendant in a Peugeot 306 on Cambridge Road, Millom.

"They flashed their lights for him to pull over which he did by the garage.

"He was breath tested and found to be over the limit and arrested."

Kershaw was found to have 70 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, exceeding the prescribed limit which is 35.

The 27-year-old pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol.

Mr Sean Harkin, defending, told the court on Tuesday: "The circumstances are that the defendant had gone to a fireworks display at the Devonshire Hotel.

"He had gone in his car because it was pouring down.

"He met up with some friends and had a drink.

"He then made the very bad judgment to get into his car and drive home.

"He works at Sellafield and needs his car to get to work because he works shifts and there is limited public transport.

"He will keep his job, but will have to rely on colleagues for a lift."

He was fined £500 and ordered to pay a £50 victim surcharge.

He must also pay £85 to the Crown Prosecution Service and a £150 criminal court charge. A collection order was made.

He was also disqualified from holding or obtaining a driving licence for 18 months which can be reduced by 18 weeks if Kershaw satisfactorily completes a course approved by the Secretary of State.
