INMATES at Cumbria’s only prison staged an eight-hour protest.

Negotiators were called to HMP Haverigg on Saturday September 20 after 20 inmates took part in what the Ministry of Justice described as a “peaceful protest”.

However, officers wearing riot gear were seen entering HMP Haverigg in the afternoon, and signs directing them to meeting points for “Operation Tornado” were also put up outside the prison.

Nobody was hurt during the protest, which lasted from noon until 8pm.

Three inmates managed to unveil a banner on the roof of the prison during the incident.

It is unclear what sparked the protest, however it has been reported that it was due to the prison’s food and “regime”.

Members of the public could hear shouting, dogs barking and cheering during the long negotiations.

A Prison Service spokesman said: “A protest involving a number of prisoners at HMP Haverigg ended following negotiation with prison staff.

“No prisoners or staff were injured in the incident.”

HMP Haverigg is a category C men’s prison and, according to the Ministry of Justice website, holds 644 prisoners.
