TWO men killed after the car they were travelling in smashed into a tree have been named by police.

Aaron Heasley, 25, of Victoria Street, Millom, and Dean Heasley, 24, of Settle Street, Millom, were pronounced dead at the scene last night.

Police were called to the A5093 between The Hill junction and the Millom junction at 9.30pm following reports of a one-vehicle crash.

The car involved was a blue VW Golf and was being driven by Aaron. Dean was the front seat passenger.

The car is believed to have left the road at the left hand bend by the entrance to Ghyll Scaur Quarry and collided with a tree.

A 26-year-old man, who had been sitting in the rear seat, was taken to Furness General Hospital with serious leg injuries.

Denise Burness, mayor of Millom, has offered her condolences.

She said: "Any loss of life is a tragedy but the loss of young lives are even more of a tragedy.

"My and the town council's thoughts go out to the family - it doesn't bear thinking about what they're going through.

"It makes you think how suddenly things can happen in these ways and I'm hoping action will be taken to make it safer out there."

Councillor Jack Park, Millom Town Councillor for Holborn Hill, said: "It's terribly upsetting that this has happened.

"I really feel for the parents and families at this time."

Anyone who may have witnessed the collision is asked to call Cumbria police on 101 and ask to speak to the Mobile Support Group.
