FANS of steam engines and railways came from far and wide for a milestone birthday celebration.

Families flocked to Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway over the August bank holiday weekend to mark the 100th anniversary of the railway attraction, known as La’al Ratty.

In 1915 the railway re-gauged from 3ft to the 15in line it has today. The railway welcomed visiting engines, such as Count Louis from Evesham Vale Railway, which ran alongside resident engines like Synolda for special journeys from Ravenglass to Muncaster Mill.

Visitors toured the engineers shed and steam whistle collection, viewed a model railway exhibition at Dalegarth and joined Eskdale ranger, Chris Berry, for guided walks, including an historic circular walk to Beckfoot and a walk to Girder Bridge.

The station cafe served up a special anniversary menu, and there was entertainment from a Dean organ, Egremont Town Band and Morris dance group the Two Headed Sheep.

There were also displays of woodturning by Ralph Bidder from Sleeper Crafts.

Lucy Tilsley, visitor services manager at Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway, said: “Visitors have come from far and wide and we have had lots of local people too.

“There has been something for everyone, from kids to big kids.”
