AN idyllic hall in Cumbria will feature in Monty Don's new TV show, The Secret History of the British Garden .

The famous gardener will visit Levens Hall, home to the sole surviving garden of the 1600s, in the first of four episodes in the series on Sunday.

The episode will be broadcast on BBC Two from 9pm to 10pm, and Monty pays a visit to the popular Lake District attraction.

The Gardener's World presenter will explore what influenced and inspired the designs of 17th century gardens in the opening episode and the series goes on to examine how gardens have changed over time.

Monty Don said: "My journey through 500 years of British garden history has been fascinating."
