FAMILIES flocked to Rusland Show to watch traditional Cumbrian sports, enjoy ice-creams in the sun and showcase rural crafts.

The annual extravaganza, which is put on by the Rusland Valley Horticultural Society, welcomed visitors from across South Cumbria on Saturday when organisers were blessed with wonderful weather.

Whitestock Meadow played host to the event for the show's 132nd year.

There was an abundance of activities for young and old to take part in, including egg and spoon races, tug of war, pet shows, hound trials, and a rural crafts tent.

Anthea Jones, member of Furness Spinners, Weavers and Dyers, was demonstrating traditional felting methods and displaying some of the group's products at the event today.

Mrs Jones, from Ulpha, said: "I'm been coming here for many years. It's just a lovely show with all sorts going on.

"You have got the races, the competitions. There's always a really good atmosphere.

"Everybody's really friendly."

A total of 48 competitors took part in the five-mile fell race, with Craig Roberts setting a new course record of 31 minutes 25 seconds.

Aside from the sport, there was also some novelty contests to enter including the dog with the waggiest tail and best fancy dress for children.

A rural crafts tent showcased various traditional skills, including woodturning, basket weaving and embroidery.

Show secretary Anthony Meanwell said: “It is a very family orientated show so we haven’t just got exhibits but we have all the sports and races which go on all day and are free to enter, we do try to keep it good value.”
